SDSU First Day Access

  • What is First Day Access (FDA)?

First Day Access is a South Dakota Board of Regents adopted program. It converts physical course materials into instantly accessible, totally interactive, and adaptive digital content, while drastically reducing the cost to students.

It gives students convenient day-one access to course content and allows them to experience more interactive and adaptive digital content that has been shown to improve educational outcomes. In addition, it gives faculty members the freedom to better tailor their course materials, and they still have full academic freedom to choose the texts they want for their classes.

  • Why use First Day Access?

Publishing companies are moving to digital options instead of the traditional print, and fewer physical textbooks are becoming available. During this transition, the landscape of publishers is rapidly changing.

  • What is included with First Day Access?

First Day Access usage varies from course to course, and even within the related sections, but with FDA you will find a digital textbook and/or digital courseware. Courseware typically includes digital textbooks, study guides, custom materials, and homework assignments.

The decision on how to utilize the full benefits of FDA and make use of all the courseware is ultimately made by the professor.

  • How to access your materials:

Students can access their FDA materials through D2L via a direct publisher link or the Course Tools / VitalSource Course tab.

Students receive an email titled “DO NOT DELETE - IMPORTANT SEMESTER INFORMATION” with instructions, dates, and pricing.

  • Opting Out, or Back In:

Students are automatically opted into First Day Access when they register for the course.

To opt out, visit your VitalSource Course page. You will lose access to all digital courseware and/or the textbook after the deadline.

Opt-out deadlines depend on your course start date (Fall and Spring semester deadlines are 2 weeks into the semester).

The bookstore works with the cashier’s office to credit/refund opt-outs.
      **Things to consider when opting-out / opting-in**

    1. Your instructor may require a digital textbook even without courseware.
    2. You may already have the textbook (physical or digital).
    3. If you choose to opt out of FDA, you are responsible for obtaining the correct materials.

  • I opted out on August 10th and I'm still being charged!?

Opt-outs will not be credited until after the deadline.

  • I dropped the course, do I still need to opt out?

No - if you dropped before the add/drop deadline, it will be removed from your tuition bill.

  • How do I pay for access?

It will appear on SDePay. You can work with the Cashier's Office for payment.
